Medallion Round 1 - 2015/2016 year

Oct 2015

I selected this one because I have some of the other colorway of the lily print fabric and thought I could use it.  However when tried to use it and any of the other Asian fabrics I have it just did not sing to me.  The gold seemed to need to be calmed down.  I then thought if I used mostly a black with some gold to calm down the colors and bring out the other colors with the spiky like motif.

At first I was just going to have two on opposite corners but that didn't feel right either so went with all 4 colors and corners.

Stacked Rectangles kids quilt

Oct 2015

I made this quilt top a couple of years ago.  Just not sure when.  It was from a Pincushion Boutique Sweet Treat but not one of their patterns. The pattern was Harley & Howies Game in the Easy Quilts Spring 2014 magazine. I did simple straight line quilting about 1 inch apart using one of the pens with ink that disappears with heat. In the green area at the edge I used Leah Day's skyscraper motif.  The backing is a minkie leopard pattern.

Light House -- Calm Sailing

Oct 2015

Mom made this quilt top.  She saw the quilt at PIQF last year.  She bought the fabric and pattern was a free one from the fabric manufacturer.  I quilted with the motif I call calm waters in all area's except the light house panels and for those I outlined the light houses, quilted grass and the lines implying the light was on.

Mostly Modern Sept/Oct challenge

Oct 2015

I've joined the Mostly Modern Quilt Group and this was my 3rd meeting.  The challenge from last month was this gentle curve.

It was not that difficult.  I'm going to probably make a cat cuddle out of this.

Duck friendship block

Oct 2015

The Guild has a program where people can ask other guild member to make them specific block as a Friendship block.  I decided to do this for Kerry as it was paper pieced and I'm working on my paper piecing skills.  Kerry provided the lame for the duck head and part of the body.

Elephants on Parade

Oct 2015

Mom bought this kit while at Road to California at one of the local stores within the past year or two.  I backed it in a light blue fury minky fabric.  Oh so soft!  I did not use a batt.  This was the first time I used part of the fabric as the quilting motif by blowing up the animals and marked onto the solid squares.  I then did a one inch cross hatch to make the motif stand out.  I used the Frixion pilot pen that is erasable with heat.  In the patches I used Leah Day's Spiral Illusion (without marking).  Awesome results.

San Diego trip 2015

Oct 1 & 2 2015

Mom and I drove to San Diego for Petro.  On the way down we stopped at:
  1. Annie's Quilting Den; 1876West El Norte Pkway in Escondido.  Small shop.  Bright fabrics but very very pricey!  Had a long arm and that took up most of the floor space.
  2. Grand Country Quilter; 801 Grand Ave in San Marcos.  A bit hard to find.  Thimbleberry type of fabrics.
  3. Quilt in a Day; 1955 Diamond St in San Marcos.  Large store.  Lots of $6/yard fabric like at the shows but hard to see them in the back warehouse space.  Large selection of gadgets.  Good place to go if you have a specific pattern to buy for.
The next day we went to:
  1.  Cozy Quilt Shop at 756 Jamacha Road in El Cajon.  HUGE store but lots of open space.  Sells sewing machines too.  They happen to be having one of their two annual sales.  Non-sale prices are the norm.  Got almost a full bolt of Timeless Treasure for two quilt backs at $5.60 yard.  Mom got kit at 50% off.
  2. Memory Lane Quilt Shop on 1626 N Magnolia Ave in El Cajon.  Very nice store.  Lots of Absolutely Positively Quilt Designs patterns and many made into kits.  Fabric prices reasonable.  Large store and helpful.  If you spend $250 you get $25 off next purchase but plan to spend then as there is a time limit of a couple of months.  Mom got two kits here.
  3. Rosie's Calico Cupboard at 7151 El Cajon Blvd in San Diego.  AWESOME.  Very large store with tons and tons of fabric.  Very reasonable prices.

Rainbow box inside a box inside a box.....

Oct 2015

I don't remember when I made this quilt top.  The pattern was from the book Six Halves Make a Whole Christmas by The Quilt Branch, Frosted Window Panes (page 10).  This book is copyrighted 2008 so it must be after that.

Since I'm also attempt to meet my personal challenge of quilting 52 quilts in a year I selected a quilt pattern that was not too complex.  I used Golden Thread paper and the post-it-note dots to "mark" the quilt.  Two things I learned were: 1) cut out the middle of the paper template allowed for better visibility to assure the pattern converged in the center and did not bury golden thread paper under tons of thread; 2) put the post-it-note dots on manually (the stamp device kept getting jammed) and it was sooooo much easier!!  I also decided to use white thread to make the quilting more visible and Leah Day was so correct in that it makes the visibility so much better.  Overall I'm pleased with the results.  Did have a few issues with the loops getting flattened due to multiple points and seam thickness hindering the hoping foot.

Oct Guild Block of Month

Sept 2015

Very cute.  Not too difficult. Mine and all of Guild.  Three winners selected, but not me.
