The guild had Helen Frost as the guest speaker and teacher. Her lecture was fun and sprinkled with magic tricks and helpful quilting hints! Helen's mother wrote the Blooming 9 patch book that mom and I have made several of. This class is very very similar. The class was large and very fun. I got most of the project done in the class but had to finish at home the next day. I don't know what to do with it as I don't like small quilts. I made this from batiks that were left over from a project mom is making. I hope to put it in as a medallion next year. It is a bigger then the rules call for but I'll ask.

Medallion 2016 Round #3
Medallion Round 3.
Starting point:
Used books Mariner's Medallion by M'Liss Rae Hawley for the lighthouse inspiration but since the block in the book was applique and I don't do applicque. I pieced the block. The book Quilted Adventures by Sara Nephew was the inspiration for the nautical flags, fish and sun. I really like this medallion effort as it was a creative process for me.

AQS Phoenix Quilt Show 2016
Feb 11, 2016
For an AQS show this was pathetic. The number of vendors was small and most of them had been at Road to CA so we had seen most of it. The few local stores that had booths were good but we also went to most of them while in Phoenix. The quilts as always at these shows are so amazing that I am intimidated and they make me feel me unworthy. We then visited quilt stores in the area. Mom and I do not plan to go to this show again until it gets much better. My sister will probably go after work in the years to come and let us know when it is vastly better.

Mostly Modern February Hexi Challenge
Feb 9, 2016
The Mostly Modern Group I belong to has a monthly challenge and for Feb it was hexi's I made these with the scraps from Gravity. These were fun to make. Not sure what I will do with these but I plan to continue to make these with the scraps and decide later.
Catherine from the group finish her challenge.

Mom made this quilt top many many years ago. The pattern was from Peddlers of Danville as was the fabrics. The outer border was to have an applique vine but Mom doesn't do applique. I started quilting a flower on the outer border but didn't like it and decided to just to an overall large stipple so had to unsew.

Feb 8, 2016
I gave mom the pattern and FQ for this on Christmas 2015. I purchased it at Backporch Quilts in Monterey while there in Dec. It is backed in navy minkie. I quilted the bowl with calm water and large stipple everywhere else.

Green Googly
Jan 15, 2016 -- Feb 5, 2016
I started this quilt Friday Jan 15 after work and while having mom and friends over for a day of sewing. The pattern is Googly by A Quilter's Dream. I think I bought the pattern a few years ago and have pulled fabric to make it a couple of times but never started. I had a package of 12 FQs that I got at Road to CA last Jan and felt it was perfect and so I began. Not sure where my head was at but I've made mistake after mistake. The blocks are cut and built with 3 FQs and luckily I only had one set going at a time. The first set I made cutting errors and had to become imaginative in getting the all the parts. There is very little wiggle room and spare fabric. I had to do major reverse sewing as I forgot to make snow balls a couple of times.
The second set was better but still made a cutting error by having the 18" and 21" sides reversed so again creativity to get all the parts. A bit less reverse sewing but still some as I got the sides with specific widths in the wrong place.
The third set I only made a mistake of adding the side in the wrong location. Will I ever get it right?
The fourth and final set I once again had to unsew a bit as I attached the wrong width to the wrong side. I feel this quilt top is a bit cursed for me.
With input from Joanne and Dale I've put on a black boarder. I will be backing in a lime green fury minkie.
April 8, 2016. Finished quilting and binding. I wanted to use the new circle quilting templates I had purchased for this but they were too small. So I marked 4 circles of increasing diameter. In the corners I quilted "L's", the border was circle in a circle. Wrapped the fuzzy backing over for the binding.

Snow Angels: Reverse Applique Snow Days - flannel
Feb 4, 2016
I finally finished this quilt. I think I made the quilt top over 10 years ago but it could have been longer. I'm pretty sure the pattern was from a Quiltmaker magazine but I could not find it on an internet search. The snow angel is reverse applique. I remember being annoyed that I couldn't find the light blue version of the flannel background and only the light green was available but I think it came out fine. In the photo is looks light blue and not light green. I quilted what I hope looks and snow drifts through out the background. I went around each of the snow angels with 4 rows of echo stitching. In the purple inner boarder I have quilted a large snowflake motif (using golden threads) and in the outer blue boarder I have a free motion icicles.

Aviatrix Medallion
Dec 2015
I purchased this kit in Jan 2015 at the Road to California trip. I didn't allow myself to start it because I wanted to get some UFOs completed. During the work holiday shut down I wanted to start something new. Pattern: Aviatrix Medallion by Elizabeth Hartman
Center medallion done! It actually went together well because I used the Deluxe Corner Trimmer from Marti Michell. Cutting the points off the 45 degree tips made putting the diamond together so much more accurate.
