Reflections Quilt

May 29, 2016

I purchased this as a kit ($63) earlier this year from Craftys as it was on sale and I like bright colors.  When I got the kit I discovered it was a paper piece pattern.  Although not a very complex paper piece.  I was a bit discouraged as I didn't want to make as a paper piece so it went on the shelf until I had a chance to work out how I wanted to make it.  It is made from two jelly rolls of Gradations from Benartex.
On Saturday Mary 28 Mom and I took a Basic Skills class from the guild on paper piecing.  Mom had be very opposed to paper piecing due to a few attempts many years ago.  The class was taught by Lline W and was great.  The project was an online paper piece mystery quilt and Lline had the class progress from simple to harder blocks.  Mom got tired before the class go to the last blocks so we left but she got over her "fear" of paper piecing.  On the drive home I remember this project and thought it would be great for mom and I to do together and reinforce some of the basic steps about paper piecing (does not cover the measure and calculating how big to make each fabric piece).

In two weeks I plan to have us start a slightly more complex paper piece project, probably from the book Bella Bella.  Then in a week or so after that have Mom take on one of the clothes paper piece block of the months which requires all of the paper piece skills. What Was I Thinking Paper Pieced Clothes

June 4th Mom started another paper piece project, Ciao Bella, from the book Bella Bella.

June 18, Mom and I finished the blocks for Reflections and started sewing rows together.  Mom then pulled the paper off.  I added 1/2 blocks of the spares to offset the blocks so the narrow center stripe does not align row after row.  Finished rows and put a black narrow border then the variegated.

Exploring Value in Quilting with Grace Errea

June 18, 2016

Great class. Both Mom and I took the class and together we constructed a value and color Periodic Table using our own scraps.  I have two "holes", orange two and purple seven.  A trick to determine the value is to take a picture and convert the picture to black & white and then using the gray scale (supplied by Grace) determine its number between 1 and 8. This is the table mom and I made in class.  I'm going to make another while straightening up the scrap bin.

I learned a lot about value and how to use it to aid in providing shadow and dimension to picture quilts.  I purchased one of Grace's pattern; Kermit, the Frog.  I want to reinforce what I learned about value and plan to make the pattern with a blue frog (instead of green) and a complimentary yellow flower (instead of red).

Medallion 2016 round 5

Not sure what I'm going to do.  I want to use the new borders book I got while in Paducah.

I ended up just doing a border that looks like a fence.  I like how the fence border "stopped" the diagonal and caused them to become orchard rows.  However, I didn't use any of the existing fabrics in my border and I'm suppose to.  Plus it is a bit uninteresting.  So I steam-n-seamed some of the apples and crows from the other fabrics to the fence.  Hard to tell until you get up close.  I liked the effect but what I don't like that happened is that the steam made the edge wavy.  I had measured the outer border and the quilt is square.

Quilt Entry notes -- 2016 Wine Country Quilt Show

April 10, 2016

This is my first year of being fully responsible for quilt entry.  2015 I performed this job with Joanne and in 2014 I shadowed her.

The cut off for the show was April 8th.  The week before the dead line there was about 150 or half of the quilts needed.  I was nervous as this was the first year I am solely responsible for quilt entry.  What seemed to get things going was the email blast with the actual number of quilts NEEDED.  A couple of people told me that got the spurred on.  Just asking for quilts did not provide visibility into how big was the need.

At the last meeting before the deadline I had a lot people turning in forms and having me take pictures.  I need to remember to slow down and stay focused.  I have a photo of 1 quilt but don't know who's it is.  I'll make a print out and ask Joanne to ask around at the next meeting since I can't attend it.

Doing the show layout in PowerPoint seems to be working well.  It is a bit tedious and error prone to label each pic in PPT.  It is the ID that gets me mixed up the most and I find that I use the same ID over when quilts come in at different times from people.  Will think on a different approach for the unique identifier.  I'd love to discuss with other shows how they do entry and layout.

This is the first year with the quilt release on the quilt paper and online form.  I hope that speeds up drop off.  Also the collection from Pointless Sister called Abstract is coming in on Friday so that issue of last year when 1 person checked in 20+ quilts won't happen.

This is the first year we are "selling" quilts that hang in the show.  We got 50 entries to be sold.  Not bad.

We seem to have more quilts then room for so I pulled some of my and mom's quilts.  I'm going to see if I can  develop a measure using the linear inches and/or total square inches.

May 2, 2016

Had a total of 331 entries.  The layout team is having some issues with placing them.  Several email blasts and the May newsletter asked for pulls and they are coming in.  I pulled several on mine and mom's to help out.  I'll just put them in the boutique.  Going to work on some ways to determine when we are filling up space so we won't have this issue again next year. Presently I'm thinking of a three metrics, number of quilts, linear feet and square inches.  I'll work out the "baseline" from this years show.  Hope I have the spreadsheet from last year to sanity check the baseline.

Layout team has put booths on the stage in the main room for MQSC project/classes like the Helen Frost class, Roosters, cat cuddles and community quilts ....
