Mom and I took Sandra Bruce's Material Matrix class http://www.sandrabruce.com/quilting/teaching_etcetera.html We worked on the project together. The process was really interesting and also added to my knowledge about color value. This is the class sample.
Various notes taken in class:
Picture selection -- Must have theme (no landscapes). Theme to have sharp & good contrast
Over lay grid -- Sandra will apply grid for a small fee, email her. Grid to always be 2" x 2". Good quilt size is 50" x 50" (25 squares by 25 squares). Sandra uses photoshop. Consider trying squares on point. Try different % of size of photo and move grid around photo to get good placement.
For circles (eye pupils) applique
For eyes and face profiles cannot be "wonky"
Normally Sandra works with 4 x 4 sections. Class was 3x3 sections.
We complete the bottom 3 9-patches in class.
Feb 4, 2017 Pulled this out of the UFO pile and completed the top. Took me a bit to remember how to make each of the small square. Big Ah Ha moment was start bigger and cut down with each addition. Only thing I would change is the on the thread but not going to do as I just finished it to put it in the June show as a MQSC sponsored class project.
April 2017. Finished quilting it at Walker Ranch retreat. I used chenille yarn as the pin heads. The thread looks even more Picasso-esc.
