August 2016,
While at Sugar Pine quilt shop in May I saw this pattern for this Tool Tote bag pattern by Quilts Illustrated. From the picture is looked the perfect size to carry all of our quilting supplies. As I've never made a bag before I ask Dale if I had any question would she be willing to help me out. She generously said yes and bought the pattern too. Back at the retreat Joanne and Teresa also wanted to make a bags so we decided to do a group sewing effort. It took a bit find two and possibly three consecutive days that we could get together to work on the bags. We ended needing only two days.
Each was to cut out the pieces and quilt before starting on Friday morning. I had gotten the wrong "extra" labels off the web site so Mom's bag was cut out wrong and had to be redone. Thankfully Dale caught that error for us the week before the bag sew day so we had a week to re-cut the pieces. I quilted Mom's pieces but didn't get mine done in time. So Mom and I worked on just her bag construction on Friday. On Saturday morning I quilted my pieces and was able to complete my bag as well as everyone else.
I enjoyed learning the bag's construction. The instructions were not the best but Dale was great at clarifying. One of the difficulty with the pattern was that the pictures showing construction had different fabric then the front page so that made it difficult to follow. I originally wanted a stripe fabric but I could not figure out which way to have the stripe go for cutting out, so I went with an overall print. This was the first time I had worked with the fusible foam and fusible light batting. All went well with that. The zipper installation wasn't too bad either. Conclusion, for my second bag (first was the chicken bag from last week) attempt, I'm liking bag construction.
The bag is "boxy" and opens like a doctor bag because of the stays. It has lots of pockets.
Here are all of our bags.
